WHAT IS A MARINE SURVEY?
A critical examination or inspection of a marine vessel for a specific purpose; the action of ascertaining facts regarding conditions or the condition of something to provide exact information especially to persons responsible or in fact interested; an examination of a vessel or a part of its cargo or equipment to determine its condition, responsibility for damage and disposition to be made.
PRE-PURCHASE SURVEY

This is the most comprehensive type of inspection, and is strongly advised when purchasing a new or used vessel. Condition and overall operation of the vessel should be examined. This covers structural integrity, electrical systems, the propulsion system, the fuel system, other machinery, navigation equipment, miscellaneous on-board systems, cosmetic appearance, electronics, and overall maintenance as well as an out-of-water inspection and a sea trial.

INSURANCE SURVEY

This inspection is performed so that the insurance company can determine whether or not the vessel is an acceptable risk. They are interested in structural integrity and safety for its intended use. Most insurance companies require a survey on older boats. They will also want to know the vessel's fair market value.

DAMAGE SURVEY

This is performed to assess the extent of damage, recommend repairs, estimate repair cost, and if requested, possible cause.

HOW OFTEN ARE SURVEYS REQUIRED?
It will depend on the insurance company, the value of your vessel and its age. We recommend a new survey every three years.

HOW LONG DOES A SURVEY TAKE?
The survey process and sea trial can run anywhere from 2 to 10 hours depending on the size of the vessel and 2 to 8 hours in the office to prepare the report. We will have your full report in your hand within thirty-six (36) hours.
HOW TO PREPARE FOR THE SURVEY.

Taking these steps will save you time and money by preparing the vessel for the survey. Arrange to present a clean, shipshape boat, and have all All manuals, maintenance log, receipts, registration, USCG documentation papers and miscellaneous gear ready. If we need to do a hull inspection you need to make arrangements for the vessel to be hauled. Lockers and cabin areas should be cleared of all miscellaneous gear so that we are able to see the construction of the vessel. The surveyor may request minor dismantling of interior ceilings, headliners, flooring, etc. in order to gain access to the suspected areas. Random removal and examination of below-the-waterline fasteners on wood boats may be required. Any dismantling and re-installation of parts should be performed by qualified personnel and is the responsibility of the person ordering the survey. Written authorization from the owner may be needed to board and/or to remove part of the vessel. Please have the vessel plugged into shore power with a 30 amp or 50 amp shore power cord(s) and all batteries installed, wired-in and full-charged so that we may test all of the systems.
